This volume is bound in a dark, durable leather featuring a pebble-grained finishA texture created by embossing the leather to give it a protective, bumpy surface, common in 18th and 19th-century bindings.. The front cover itself bears no title or decoration.
On the spine, at the left edge of the image, there are faint remains of gilt original: "gilt lettering"; gold leaf applied to the leather markings. These horizontal lines and fragmentary letters would have originally displayed the title or the author’s name, but they are now too worn and partial to be deciphered. The wear suggests this book was frequently pulled from a shelf and handled over many years.
