An alchemical diagram depicts a central figure obscured by a large circular wheel and a seven-pointed star. At the center of the star is a human face with an open mouth. Each point of the star contains symbols for the Sun, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, and Mercury. The wheel surrounding the star contains a Latin phrase: "Visit the interior of the earth; by rectifying you will find the hidden stone" original: "Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem". The first letters of these words form the word V.I.T.R.I.O.L., a common alchemical acronym for the universal solvent. The figure's hands emerge from behind the wheel. The left hand holds a burning candle. The right hand holds a yellow weight. The figure stands with the right foot on dark, rocky earth and the left foot in water. Four triangles in the corners represent the elements: Fire (top left), Air (top right), Water (bottom left), and Earth (bottom right). Two larger yellow triangles sit behind the wheel. The top one contains the words Soul original: Anima and Spirit original: Spiritus. The bottom one contains the word Body original: Corpus above a geometric cube. A pair of blue wings crowns the top of the wheel.
A stream breaks forth in such a way that those who dwell there lose their path; it falls again and rushes away from the people. This biblical quote likely refers to the "hidden" or "moving" nature of the alchemical mercury or the "living water" required for the work.
