An ornamental woodcut or engraving serves as the frontispiece. The design centers on an oval containing a profile bust of a classical figure with wavy, braided hair. The name Hermes appears vertically to the left of the profile. The name Apollo appears vertically to the right. This oval sits inside a large diamond shape filled with horizontal lines. A wide border frames the central image. It consists of alternating square and diamond panels. Twelve square panels show the signs of the zodiac:
Top: Cancer the crab, Leo the lion, and Virgo the winged virgin.
Right: Libra the scales, Scorpio the scorpion, and Sagittarius the centaur.
Bottom: Capricorn the goat, Aquarius the water bearer, and Pisces the two fish.
Left: Aries the ram, Taurus the bull, and Gemini the twins.
Eight diamond panels between the zodiac signs contain stylized fleur-de-lis, or lily, ornaments.
Hermes was the Greek messenger god of boundaries, transitions, and communication. In Western esotericism, he is the patron of wisdom and the namesake of the Hermetic tradition.
original: "APOLLIN"; Apollo was the Greek god of the sun, music, and prophecy. His inclusion alongside Hermes represents the balance between inspired intuition and rational clarity.
The border depicts the Zodiac: a circle of twelve thirty degree divisions of celestial longitude that are centered upon the ecliptic, the path of the sun. The signs included are:
Aries: The Ram.
Taurus: The Bull.
Gemini: The Twins.
Cancer: The Crab.
Leo: The Lion.
Virgo: The Virgin.
Libra: The Scales.
Scorpio: The Scorpion.
Sagittarius: The Archer.
Capricorn: The Sea-Goat.
Aquarius: The Water-Bearer.
Pisces: The Fish.
The fleur-de-lis is a stylized lily used as a decorative symbol, often representing light or purity.
