This printer's mark belongs to the famous Elzevier family of Leiden. It depicts a sturdy elm tree entwined with a fruitful grapevine, representing the support that scholarly labor (the vine) receives from the publisher (the tree). To the right of the tree stands a bearded man, often referred to as "the hermit." A banner entwined in the branches bears the Latin motto Non Solus, which translates to "Not Alone," signifying that the scholar in his study is never truly solitary while in the company of books and wisdom.
