This 17th-century volume is bound in light brown leather, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship through various decorative techniques. The binding utilizes blind-tooling a technique where decorative patterns are impressed into leather using heated tools without the use of gold or pigment, creating a subtle, indented design and gold-tooling a process where gold leaf is pressed into the leather with heated tools to create a shimmering, decorative effect.
The front cover is dominated by a large, central lozenge-shaped medallion a diamond-shaped decorative ornament. This central feature is blind-stamped with a symmetrical pattern of foliage and scrolls. A double-line blind-tooled border frames the entire cover. At each corner of the inner rectangle and at the midpoints of the vertical lines, the binder has placed small decorative palmettes or fleurons small, flower-like or leaf-like stamps used to accent corners and borders.
The spine is constructed with five prominent raised bands the horizontal ridges on a book's spine where the leather covers the cords or "supports" used to sew the pages together. These bands divide the spine into six compartments.
The edges of the boards also show traces of decorative tooling, indicating the thoroughness of the book’s decoration.
