The Society of Jesus is the formal name for the Jesuit order. At the time of this publication in 1781, the order had been suppressed by the Pope (in 1773), leaving many former members—like the author—in a state of transition. "Joseph Aloisius Maier" was actually a pseudonym for the famous Viennese satirist and poet Aloys Blumauer.
