A large woodcut illustration depicts an elaborate architectural monument. The structure consists of several levels. The ground-level base features a classical porch with four columns and a central archway with a pediment, leading into a dark interior. Above this is a large rectangular second tier. It features a prominent relief of a winged head, a gorgoneion or Medusa-like figure, in the center. A massive stepped pyramid (a monumental structure with a square base and sloping sides) rises from the second tier. A tall, extremely slender obelisk (a tapering four-sided stone pillar) or needle-like spire rises from a small pedestal at the peak of the pyramid. A winged female figure stands at the very summit of the spire. The monument is set in a landscape framed by two tall, gnarled trees. In the foreground, the ground is paved. Several broken columns and architectural ruins are scattered about. The background text is bleed-through from the reverse side of the paper.
