Christian virtue, is to restrain and regulate one’s outward senses, lower reason, and the will and understanding. By doing this, one makes way for the Spirit of GOD, which will then take possession of souls prepared in this way and live within them. We are to imitate JESUS CHRIST by mortifying original: "mortifying"; the spiritual practice of self-denial or subduing bodily desires and the ego ourselves and entirely surrendering our will and understanding to the will and light of GOD through a close communion with him in love. What can make a person as happy as having their love fixed upon an object that will never fail or disappoint them? For if we are united to GOD, he—being eternal—cannot fail. His goodness will give us not only appropriate but even undeserved rewards; his truth will ease us of all our jealousies and fears; his omnipotence original: "omnipotence"; all-encompassing power will secure our hope and bring life to our faith; his omniscience original: "omniscience"; all-knowing nature will enlighten our understanding; and his presence will satisfy our thirsty and craving desires with foretastes original: "antepasts" of eternal joy and happiness.
