There have indeed existed many men—and those outstanding in both learning and natural talent—who have attempted to dedicate the fates of philosophy to enduring literary monuments original: "literarum monumentis." However, I have come to understand that these sacred rites original: "haec... sacra." Buddeus uses religious or "sacred" language to describe the pursuit of wisdom and scholarship. of learning do not sustain themselves in any other way than by each individual bringing into the public sphere whatever they have achieved through their own labor,
