The exterior of this volume is a fine example of 19th-century bookbinding. The central panel is decorated with marbled paper in a "snail" or "comb" pattern—so named for the delicate, swirling loops created by the artisan floating ink on a liquid bath. The spine is bound in brown pebbled leather, which provided durability for a frequently consulted medical reference.
While much of the gold-leaf lettering on the spine has worn away, the following fragments remain visible:
S.?
COM?MISSION original Latin fragment: missio; likely referring to a scientific commission, board, or the "Commission of Hospitals."
G?RAT... original Latin fragment: grat; this may be part of a surname or the word gratis (free), often found on volumes distributed to medical students or professionals without charge.
