A Short Treatise on the Love of God

Love of God and of the Neighbor.

1st Chapter...to fulfill perfection / until he is entirely filled with God, who is Love / in his entire being / both internally and externally.

9. Thus, it is first required of a true Lover / that he knows well that which he loves, or must love; John 17:3 therefore this Tempter The "Lawyer" or scribe who questioned Jesus in the Gospels (Matthew 22:35) should have known Jesus first Romans 10:4. and above all; He who was the only Deuteronomy 6:5, 10:12. Beginning and End of the Law; the Law here wishes to signify through Jesus the Savior / that this Lord was the Love of God itself: the only Lord and God / the only Love: whom one must love alone / with one's entire being / internally and externally.

10. If this Lawyer Wetgeleerde: a scholar or scribe specialized in the Mosaic Law had known Jesus / he would not have posed that question to Him at all: for He alone was the true Fulfiller of this great Commandment, and also the only Lawgiver who can save and destroy: he should have only desired power / light / and spirit from Jesus; to first fulfill all lesser Commandments in this Love of Jesus: in such a way he would not have tempted Jesus / but all his actions would have been rooted in truth.

11. So that one also sees plainly and clearly in this Tempting Lawyer / that the Law, when impressed upon a heart of stone / does indeed teach the Commandments through outward knowledge; Romans 8:3 but it does not grant the doing [the power to act]; the Law is too powerless for that through the Flesh: if anyone directs and arranges all his actions and life according to it / it is nonetheless only in the pow-
