A woodcut printer's device of the Elzevier family. It depicts the Roman goddess Minerva in armor with a helmet and spear, standing next to an olive tree. Her shield rests on the ground beside her. An owl, symbol of wisdom, is perched on the ground at the base of the tree. A scroll entwined around the tree trunk bears the motto "DO NOT WANDER BEYOND THE OLIVE TREES" original Latin: "NE EXTRA OLEAS"; a proverb suggesting one should stay within the bounds of their expertise or purpose.
