I was able, a French turn, &
I have endeavored to give my Trans-
lation an air of an original. If
despite all my precautions,
one finds something therein to
criticize, I will follow with a glad heart
the advice that people take the trouble
to give me, & I will correct
myself without shame in a se-
cond Edition. I had at
first some thought of justifying
my Translation in detail with
notes; but I subsequently believed
that I would do something
more useful for the Reader, if
instead of the Table of contents
of my Author, I substituted
remarks on the teachings
contained in each Chapter,
which would be like the summary &
the essence original: "le suc"; literally "the juice" or "sap," referring to the most vital part of the work. of the entire Book.
