If in the second volume, we have inserted subjects treated more methodically, our goal was also to satisfy those readers upon whom pensées détachées isolated thoughts often make little impression. It also serves those who need to exercise their meditations more deeply, or to be aided in them by reasoning. To relieve their attention through a variety of subjects, we have mixed into the second volume some of Mr. St. Martin's Louis Claude de Saint-Martin opinions on literature, and some of the poems he composed in his youth.
