weak testimony of the feelings of
esteem and gratitude for the part
you have in this inestimable benefit.
Far from me be the thought of
preparing here a frivolous or
insidious praise; that would be
to poorly recognize the important
service you have rendered me. No,
Sir, the motives that engaged me
to write to you are not of this kind.
It is, in the first place, to offer you
the sweet consolation that suits
your soul: that of seeing your
labors bear fruit, of having contributed
to snatching a soul from the claws
of the voracious lion A traditional reference to the devil or spiritual ruin, and to see
myself participate through the bonds
of Christian charity in the union
that must reign among all those
who have the same way of thinking.
In the second place, it is to present
to you, to recommend to you a
person who is extremely dear to me:
my brother, to whom I am more
intimately united by friendship than
by the ties of blood. He is known by some
