This refers to the international community of scholars and intellectuals, often called the "Republic of Letters.", which for a long time had judged [this work] worthy to be adorned with both a Preface and his own most weighty endorsement original: calculo. Literally a "pebble" used for voting in antiquity, here meaning a formal judgment or vote of approval.. It was indeed a pleasure to reap the true and, for that very reason, most welcome fruit of the English journey which I had undertaken in the Year of our restored salvation 1690 M DC XC.. It was also a pleasure to recall to mind the memory of that honorable friendship original: consuetudinis. This suggests a scholarly or social intimacy. which existed between me and the incomparable Wedel Georg Wolfgang Wedel (1645–1721), the famous physician and chemist mentioned on the previous page. upon my return from that most cultured sojourn original: peregrinatione. While it means pilgrimage, in this context it refers to his scholarly travels abroad.. It cannot be expressed...
