An intricate black and white bookplate in the Art Nouveau style. A central circular medallion contains a stylized tree with the year 1902 at its base. The text around the tree reads THE HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY OF NEW YORK. Two kneeling nude female figures support the medallion among elaborate swirling vine and floral motifs. A horizontal band of roses separates the illustration from the text area below.

A folio A folio is a large book format where the printing sheets are folded only once. This produces large pages and a tall volume.
A circular color bookplate is attached to a white rectangular card. The outer border of the circle contains gold text that reads HERMETIC PHILOSOPHY original: "PHILOSOPHIA • HERMETICA". The center features a blue oval with a white pelican in her piety. This is a traditional image of a mother pelican feeding her young with her own blood. It appears under a golden crown and divine radiance. Below the bird is a heraldic shield displaying a red cross with a small red rose in each of the four quarters. This imagery is often associated with Rosicrucian traditions.
