Ferdinand Bamovius of Jarpa original: "Ferdinan: Bamovij Jarpen." This is a handwritten ownership mark in brown ink, likely belonging to a later owner of the book.
A woodcut printer's mark or emblem depicts a tall, leafy tree growing from a small patch of earth. At the base of the tree on the left sits a small owl, the traditional companion of Minerva. To the right stands a female figure in classical armor and a plumed helmet, representing Minerva (Pallas Athena), the goddess of wisdom, holding a shield. A banner winds around the tree trunk with the Latin motto: "NE EXTRA OLEAS."
The motto "Ne extra oleas" literally means "Not beyond the olive trees." It is a classical proverb found in Erasmus's "Adagia," meaning one should not stray from the subject or the boundaries of the course, much like a chariot must stay within the olive-tree markers of a race track.
