if it is noticed that things are otherwise than they should be, it is possible to add,
take away, or change them, according to necessity or
whim. Likewise, a more exact account of
expenses can be undertaken, while from such a Sketch original: "Sciagraphia." In early modern architecture, this term referred to a profile or sectional drawing, but Comenius uses it here as a general term for a preliminary outline. the length, width, and height—
along with the required Material, Form,
Workers, Tools, and Time—are foreseen.
By comparing these things with his own resources, the Architect judges whether he can
safely undertake the Work. This is so
that what Christ warns of in the parable
does not happen to him, lest he be mocked
by those who say:
This man began to build, and
was not able to finish (Luke 14).
Architects usually conceive the form of
the future work in their minds, and express it in a
model, in three ways. In a flat plan original: "In plano." This refers to what we would call a floor plan or "ichnography.",
as the Foundations are laid; in the facade original: "in fronte," also known as "orthography," showing the vertical elevation,
as it will be seen in the upright Walls;
and finally, most fully, as all things will
hold together through all Dimensions,
inside and out.
