The Assumption of Mary original: "Assumptio Mariæ"

A woodcut illustration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The composition is divided into two halves. In the lower section, a group of apostles is gathered around an open, empty tomb, depicted as a stone chest. They are shown in various poses of awe and contemplation, with several figures looking directly upward. In the upper section, Mary is depicted being carried toward heaven by several small angels and cherubs, emerging from a bank of thick, stylized clouds. The style is characteristic of early modern European woodblock printing, with heavy line-work and hatching to create shadow.
