A 16th-century style woodcut depicts the martyrdom of Saint Paul. In the center, an executioner in period clothing stands prominently, holding a large sword. To the right, the severed head of Saint Paul lies on the ground; three distinct jets of water spring up from the earth where the head is said to have bounced, representing the legend of the Three Fountains original: "Tre Fontane". The background is filled with a dense crowd of soldiers carrying halberds and spears, as well as various onlookers in contemporary Renaissance-era dress and headgear.
