A square bookplate is pasted onto the dark inner cover of the volume. The bookplate features a circular seal. In the outer ring of the seal, the text "STANFORD UNIVERSITY LIBRARY" is printed in a serif typeface. The center of the seal contains a woodcut-style illustration of a lone, tall coniferous tree standing before a landscape of rolling hills under a sky filled with decorative, swirling clouds.
The seal depicted here is the official insignia of Stanford University. The tree in the center is known as El Palo Alto, a historic coast redwood located in Palo Alto, California. It has served as a landmark for travelers and explorers for centuries and remains the central symbol of the university.
