The engraving presents a portrait of Emperor Leopold I in three-quarter profile. He wears a dark, curly wig topped with a laurel wreath, signifying his status as a triumphant ruler. His clothing includes an intricate lace collar and a patterned mantle. The oval frame is set against a background featuring a draped curtain and a distant landscape. Below the portrait, a decorative shield displays the imperial double-headed eagle. Two winged children, known as putti, sit beside the shield on stone bases. They hold thick garlands of fruit that trail down the frame.
original: "Leopoldus D. G. Roman: Imperator". The abbreviation "D. G." stands for "Dei Gratia," meaning "By the Grace of God." This title asserts that the Emperor's authority is divinely ordained.
The title "Ever-August" (Semper Augustus) was a traditional honorary title for Holy Roman Emperors. It suggests a continuous state of majesty and power.
original: "Etc. Rex. Archidux Austriae. Dux Burgundiae." The use of "Etc." indicates the vast number of additional minor titles held by the Habsburg ruler.
