It was especially during the years 1773 and 1774 that I undertook, at my home, the treatment of a young lady aged 29 named Miss Œsterline Francisca Österlin (1744–1805) was a patient and relative of Mesmer; her case is considered the first major success of his magnetic method.. She had been afflicted for several years with a convulsive illness, the most distressing symptoms of which were that the blood rushed with impetuosity toward the head, exciting in that part the most cruel pains in the teeth and ears; these were followed by delirium, rage, vomiting, and fainting syncope: a temporary loss of consciousness caused by a fall in blood pressure. This was for me the most favorable opportunity to observe with exactness that kind of ebb and flow original: "flux & reflux" that ANIMAL MAGNETISM causes the human body to experience. The patient often had beneficial crises, and a remarkable relief was the result; but this was only a temporary enjoy—
