The modern Truth-seeker takes very little on trust. Unless those claiming to possess hidden lore can demonstrate their power in practical affairs, people remain suspicious of them. The religious awe for the priesthood that is so common in Eastern original: "Oriental" countries is absent in most Western people. In India, a holy man in yellow robes is treated with reverence by both adults and children; in this country, however, adults stare and young boys throw stones until he has to seek police protection. This behavior may seem irreverent or even uncivilized, yet it expresses an innate rejection of anything that tries to establish itself on any foundation other than practical results.
