The detriment original: "detrimentum"; the sign where a planet's influence is weakened because it is opposite its home sign. of any planet is said to be the seventh sign from its house—that is, the opposite sign. It is also called its "fall," just as Libra is opposite to Aries, and Aries is opposite to Libra. Thus, Libra is the detriment of Mars, and Aries is the detriment of Venus. Scorpio is opposite to Taurus, and is the detriment of Venus. Taurus is opposite to Scorpio, and is the detriment of Mars. Sagittarius is opposite to Gemini, and is the detriment of Mercury. Gemini is opposite to Sagittarius, and is the detriment of Jupiter. Capricorn is opposite to Cancer, and is the detriment of the Moon. Cancer is opposite to Capricorn, and is the detriment of Saturn. Aquarius is opposite to Leo, and is the detriment of the Sun. Leo is opposite to Aquarius, and is the detriment of Saturn. Pisces is opposite to Virgo, and is the detriment of Mercury. Virgo is opposite to Pisces, and is the detriment of Jupiter.
And Alchabitius Abū al-Saqr al-Qabīṣī, a 10th-century Arab astrologer. said that if two signs are the houses of a single planet, they are said to be in "concordance in the almantica" A medieval term for the zodiac belt or ecliptic.—that is, in the circle which is wide in the middle and narrow at the binding—namely, in the zodiac as it appears on a man-made armillary sphere. This is because where the zodiac crosses the equator, the circle is said to be "narrow," and where it declines from it toward the south or the north, it is said to be "wide." Abu Ma'shar Albumasar (787–886), a famous Persian astrologer. on the other hand said that two signs which are the houses of one planet are said to be in "concordance in their journey," such as Aries and Scorpio (the houses of Mars), Taurus and Libra (the houses of Venus), Gemini and Virgo (the houses of Mercury), Sagittarius and Pisces (the houses of Jupiter), Capricorn and Aquarius (the houses of Saturn), and Cancer and Leo (the houses of the Lights, the Moon and Sun).
Dorotheus Dorotheus of Sidon, a 1st-century astrological poet. said that Saturn rejoices in Aquarius, Jupiter rejoices in Sagittarius, Mars rejoices in Scorpio, Venus rejoices in Taurus, and Mercury rejoices in Virgo.
Abu Ma'shar and Alchabitius said that the Sun is exalted in Aries, specifically in its 19th degree. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, in its 3rd degree. Saturn is exalted in Libra, in its 21st degree. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, in its 15th degree. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, in its 28th degree. Venus is exalted in Pisces, in its 27th degree. Mercury is exalted in Virgo, in its 15th degree. The Head of the Dragon The North Node of the Moon. is exalted in Gemini, in its 3rd degree. Its Tail The South Node of the Moon. is exalted in Sagittarius, in its 3rd degree. And Abu Ma'shar said that these exaltations of the planets were assigned to the aforementioned degrees because they were in those degrees when they were first created.
Abu Ma'shar, following Ptolemy (the author of the Book of Judgments The Tetrabiblos, the foundational text of Western astrology.), says that when the Sun enters Aries, it begins to ascend toward the north, toward the zenith above our heads. Then the days increase in length over the night, and its nature begins to increase in heat, especially when it reaches its 19th degree of Aries. And when the Sun is in Libra, it begins to descend toward the south, moving away from our zenith; the days decrease and the night increases in length over the day. Its nature then begins to diminish in heat, and its noble and useful operations decrease, especially when it has descended to its 19th degree.
Similarly, Abu Ma'shar said that he found in the books of certain ancients that they established Taurus as the exaltation of the Moon, because when the Sun is in Aries
(which is its exaltation), and the Moon is in Taurus, the appearance of the Moon's light then begins. Also, Taurus is the first sign of the Moon's triplicity A group of three signs of the same element; here referring to the Moon's role as a "ruler" of the Earth signs., because it immediately follows the sign of the Sun's exaltation, and she is joined to the Sun in her operations. They established Scorpio as her "descension" Also called a "fall." because it is the opposite of her exaltation.
They established Libra as the exaltation of Saturn and Aries as its descension because Saturn is opposite to the Sun in both nature and operation. Therefore, their exaltations were made opposite just as the planets themselves are opposite to each other, as was said above.
They established Cancer as the exaltation of Jupiter because Jupiter, by its nature, signifies northern winds. When it is in Cancer, nourishing northern winds arise, providing growth to plants and strengthening the nature of Jupiter. They established Capricorn as its descension because it is opposite to Jupiter’s exaltation.
They established Capricorn as the exaltation of Mars because Capricorn is southern and is opposite to the exaltation of Jupiter (as they are enemies to one another). Because the nature of Mars is southern and burning, the heat of Mars is strengthened when it is in Capricorn. They established Cancer as its descension, being the opposite of its exaltation.
They established Pisces as the exaltation of Venus because the nature of Pisces is moisture, which agrees with the nature of Venus. At that time, the moisture of the season begins to flourish, and the moisture of Venus is strengthened within it. They established Virgo as its descension because it is opposite its exaltation.
They established Virgo as the exaltation of Mercury because from that sign the dryness of the autumn season begins, and the nature of Mercury relates to dryness (except by accident). When it is in Virgo, its dryness is strengthened. They established Pisces as its descension, which is opposite its exaltation.
Gemini, truly, was established as the exaltation of the Head of the Dragon because Gemini is the first "double-bodied" original: "bicorporeū"; referring to the "mutable" signs that represent transitions between seasons. and common sign after Aries, and the Head is similarly "double-bodied" because it is composed of the two natures of Jupiter and Venus, which are the two "fortunes." Sagittarius was established as the exaltation of the Tail of the Dragon because Sagittarius is opposite Gemini, just as the Tail is opposite the Head.
Abu Ma'shar and Alchabitius said that every seventh sign from the exaltation of any planet is called its descension or fall original: "casus"; literally "a falling down.". For the Sun falls in the 19th degree of Libra, just as it is exalted in the same degree of Aries. The Moon falls or descends in Scorpio, just as it is exalted in Taurus in the same degree. Saturn falls or descends in Aries, just as it is exalted in Libra in the same degree. Jupiter falls or descends in Capricorn, just as it is exalted in Cancer in the same degree. Mars falls in Cancer or descends, just as it is exalted in Capricorn in the same degree. Venus falls or descends in Virgo, just as it is exalted in Pisces in the same degree. Mercury falls or descends in Pisces, just as it is exalted in Virgo in the same degree. The Head of the Dragon falls in Sagittarius, and the Tail in Gemini.
There is a difference between "fall" and "descension" in terminology, although one is sometimes used for the other. "Fall" is properly said regarding a house, while "descension" is said regarding an exaltation. This is because a house is likened to one's own property, while an exaltation is likened to honors or dignities, whether they are newly acquired or inherited.
