...the manifestation of results. Knowing that [result] to be inauspicious, one should bring it to peace through pacification rituals Shanti: rituals performed to avert evil or calm planetary influences and other means. As the Lord of the Greeks Yavanesvara: an influential early author in Indian astrology, likely of Greek descent or translating Greek works says:
"Whatever destiny is fixed for living beings, arising from the combination of planets and constellations at birth—those are called 'fortunes' in the context of human life-cycles. Experts describe this in two ways: 'Fixed' and 'Portentous.' That which is determined by the birth chart and unfolds in chronological order is called 'Fixed.' The results given by the seven planets as they move through the positions established at birth are called 'Portentous.'"
By this, it is shown that the "unstable" [portentous] influences can be pacified through rituals. It was also said by the holy Vyasa: "A wise man may overcome a weak destiny through personal effort." || 3 ||
Vernacular Language — (The etymology of the word Hora: Lexicographers have used the name Hora for both the Ascendant and the half-sign. Because 12 Ascendants and 24 half-signs pass within a day-and-night, Varahamihira says here—) Hora The Greek word 'Hora' (hour) adapted into Sanskrit — Many teachers say this is simply a variation of the word 'Ahoratra' [day-and-night]. If you take the four-syllable word 'A-ho-ra-tra' and remove the first syllable 'A' and the last syllable 'tra,' the two syllables 'Hora' remain in the middle. This (Hora-shastra The science of judicial astrology) indicates the time for receiving the fruits of good or bad deeds earned by living beings in their previous births. || 3 ||
Special Meaning — Therefore, people record the position of the Ascendant and planets at the time of birth or conception, which is called a birth-chart. Through this, by putting in even a little effort during a period of auspicious results, one surely gains the benefit. And during a period of inauspicious results, the bad effects can be avoided through religious observances, or the suffering is exhausted quickly with only minor worry. || 3 ||
The limbs of Time are the head, face, chest, heart, belly, waist, pelvis, genitals, the two thighs, the two knees, the two shanks, and then the two feet.
The signs, starting with Aries and the constellation Ashwini, are situated in the zodiac circle, each composed of nine quarter-constellations.
The terms Rashi, Kshetra, Griha, Riksha, Bha, and Bhavana all refer to the same concept [a Zodiac Sign]. || 4 ||
"Limbs of Time" means the body parts of the personified Time. These are the signs starting from Aries, which are measured by "nine quarter-constellations" Each of the 12 zodiac signs consists of 2.25 constellations (Nakshatras); since each constellation has 4 quarters (padas), each sign equals 9 quarters. "Starting with Ashwini" means that nine quarters of the constellations starting from Ashwini are the measure of each sign. This means the signs starting with Aries are joined with the constellation quarters starting from Ashwini. Such signs are the "limbs" or components.
