At the beginning, for the completion of the book without obstacles, the author offers salutations to Ganesha, the Sun, and the lotus feet of his father. He then describes the subject, purpose, and connection of the work in the Upajati meter:
Upajati Meter: Having bowed to Ganesha original: "Heramba", then to the Sun, and likewise to the lotus feet of my teacher Ananta, the illustrious Neelakantha explains through beautiful verses this Tajika system to delight the minds of the learned. || 1 ||
The astrologer Daivajna: a knower of fate or an astrologer named Neelakantha, having offered obeisance to Ganesha, the Sun-God, and the lotus feet of his father and teacher named Ananta, has studied the ancient Tajika texts. To convey the purpose of those vast volumes through a much shorter work written in beautiful meters like Indravajra and Rathoddhata, he reveals this "Neelakanthi" Tajika to please the minds of learned astrologers. || 1 ||
Upajati Meter: Aries is male, movable, fire, a friend, four-footed, blood-red, hot, bilious, loud-voiced, mountain-dwelling, and fierce. It is yellow, strong by day, eastern, rising unevenly, having little sexual contact or offspring, dry, royal, and balanced. || 2 ||
In the section on terminology Samjna-prakarana, the nature of the zodiac signs is first described. For example—Aries: shaped like a ram, a male sign, of "movable" classification, the fire element, strong, four-footed, blood-red in color, and "with heat" meaning a warm body. It is of a bilious temperament Pitta: one of the three Ayurvedic humors associated with fire and digestion, makes a loud sound, wanders in mountains or forests, and has a cruel or fierce nature. It is yellow-colored [By mentioning both red and yellow here, the combined color of the body is pale red or pinkish]. It is strong during the day, represents the East direction, engages in little sexual contact, has few offspring, possesses a dry luster, belongs to the Warrior Kshatriya caste, and is "odd" in the numerical counting of signs, yet it provides "even" or balanced results in its effects; for this reason, these qualities are attributed to Aries. || 2 ||
Upajati Meter: Taurus is fixed, female, earth, cool, dry, desiring the south, good land, windy, nocturnal, and four-footed. It is white, very loud, rising unevenly, with moderate offspring and contact, auspicious, and of the merchant class. || 3 ||
Taurus: shaped like a bull, of "fixed" classification, a female sign, the earth element, dry luster, cool nature, and represents the South direction. It dwells on level ground, is of a windy temperament Vata: the Ayurvedic humor associated with air and movement, and is strong at night. It has four feet, is white in color, makes a loud sound, and has an uneven rise. It is neither excessively lustful nor lacking in desire, is a gentle sign, belongs to the Merchant Vaishya caste, and has a firm, strong body. These are the characteristics of the sign Taurus. || 3 ||
