Through the knowledge of the science of the stars original: "Jyotir-gana-jnana"; referring to astronomy and astrology, if the planet is in the subdivision of Mercury original: "Buddhansha", one gains a livelihood through the path of the sacred scriptures original: "Agama-shastra". One may also find success through the study of the Vedas for the sake of wealth, through the chanting of prayers, or by acting as a family priest. 12
In the subdivision of Jupiter original: "Jivansha", the livelihood comes from the path of worshiping the gods and the twice-born original: "Bhusura"; referring to Brahmins, or through teaching. It is said that wealth comes from the Puranas, the law books original: "Shastra", the path of moral conduct, religious instruction, or through lending money original: "Kusida"; banking or usury. 13
The ancient teachers say that life's sustenance comes from gold, rubies, elephants, horses, and the purchase of land. If the planet is in the subdivision of Venus original: "Bhrigoh-sutanshu", one gains through the sale of molasses, cooked rice, milk, and curd, or through the attraction of women. 14
In the subdivision of Saturn original: "Shanyansha", one lives by base or despised paths, through crafts, working with wood, or through acts of violence. It may also come from carrying heavy loads, deceiving people, or through the root causes of mutual enmity and conflict. 15
When a planet is in its own sign, its own ninth-part subdivision term: Navamsha; a 3.20 degree division used to determine a planet's hidden strength, in a friend's sign, or in its highest exaltation; or when it is in its own decan term: Dreshkana; a 10 degree division of a sign, in the four cardinal houses, or in its primary triangle original: "Mula-trikona"; a specific favorable position for a planet; or if the planets are endowed with temporal strength or are in the best subdivision original: "Vargottama"; when a planet is in the same sign in both the main chart and the ninth-part chart—then all these planets truly grant auspicious results during their major and minor periods term: Dasha/Antardasha; the system of planetary timing in Indian astrology. 16
The lord of the eighth house original: "Randhrapa"; the house of death and transformation, or the lord of the twenty-second decan original: "Kharesha"; a sensitive point in the horoscope associated with danger, or the son of the Sun Saturn, or the lord of the point of doom original: "Maandhisha"; referring to the mathematical point Gulika/Maandi, or the lord of the ninth-part subdivision of these—whichever among these planets is of a cruel nature, 17 or is the great enemy of the lord of a particular house, or is a planet occupying a sign with no strength points original: "Bindu-shunya"; referring to the Ashtakavarga system of point-based strength—the astrologer and the questioner should declare the destruction of the body, wealth, and other matters during the ripening original: "Paka"; the period when a planet's results manifest of those planets. 18
Saturn, the point of doom, the lord of the twenty-second decan, the lord of the eighth house, and the lords of their ninth-part subdivisions—the weak periods of these planets grant death when the son of the Sun Saturn travels through a difficult sign. 19
If the lord of the house of wealth is a malefic planet, then during the minor periods of Saturn, Mars, Rahu original: "Bhogi"; the North Node of the Moon, or the Sun, they say wealth will be destroyed. The same occurs if malefic planets are present in that house. 20
