...he will keep a merchant's shop. Those people who are difficult to subdue will come under his control. He will be extremely humble. He will be a great enjoyer of pleasures. He will take the vows of a renunciant original: "Sanyas," the final stage of life in Hindu tradition involving world-abandonment. He will receive happiness from his younger brothers as if it were a windfall.
If Mercury is in the fourth house, one has beautiful friends and holds a special authority over the king's courtyard. He becomes a writer or dictates what is to be written by others; however, he shall have no hope of inheriting paternal wealth. || 4 ||
Commentary—If Mercury is in the fourth house the house representing home, mother, and comforts, one will have good friends. He will cause great agitation to the king or high officials. He will become a writer or a high official who commands others to write. And he will not even harbor hope for his father's wealth.
In the first stage of life, the womb does not retain a son; his intellect is the means of acquiring wealth. When Mercury is known to be in the fifth, the lineage is cut off or troubled by deceptive practices. || 5 ||
Commentary—If Mercury is in the fifth house the house of children and intelligence, then in his early years, his wife's pregnancies will not survive. His intellect will be geared toward the acquisition of wealth. No one will be able to find the limit of his cunning.
Opposition to people, the suppression of enemies, the awakening of ascetics, and the obstruction of the winds. When Mercury is in the house of enemies, he deals in treasures and acquires wealth by force. || 6 ||
Commentary—When Mercury is in the sixth house the house of enemies and health, there will be opposition among people. He will restrain his enemies. He will even give instruction to renunciants. He will suffer from ailments of the "wind" term: "Vata," one of the three bodily humors in Ayurveda, often relating to nerves or digestion. He will be helpful. He will manage or clear out hoards of wealth. He will gain wealth through forceful means.
