...as well as Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars as masculine. Mercury, however, because he works equally in dryness and humidity, they the ancient authorities, likely referring to Ptolemy said has a share in both genders through association.
In respect to the sun, those in the East are masculine; those in the West are feminine.Others also say that the planets, so to speak, "masculinize" and "feminize" according to the figures aspects or geometric relationships which they form in their comparison with the sun. For when they precede the sun and emerge in the East, they are masculine; but when they follow the sun and are in the West, they are called feminine. This same thing is also proven by the figures they form on the horizon. For when they are in the places from the East up to the mid-heaven the 10th house or zenith, or from the West up to the opposite of the mid-heaven under the earth the nadir, they are masculine; this is because when they are in the East, they linger in that part from which the wind called aslabe likely a transliteration of an Arabic term for an easterly wind proceeds. In the two remaining quarters, however, they are feminine, because they occupy that part from which adabo likely a westerly wind proceeds.
Since there are likewise two spaces of time from which time is made—of which one is day, which is characterized as masculine because of its heat and its effective and moving force; the other is night, which is feminized because of its humidity and rest—they said that the Moon and Venus are nocturnal, while the Sun and Jupiter are diurnal. Mercury, however, as we said before, they made a companion to both, and reported him to be diurnal in the East but nocturnal in the West. They divided the two "malefics" Saturn and Mars beyond these two modes, but they did this not by nature but by the principle of opposites. For when similar things are mixed with things whose complexion the balance of qualities is suitable, their health is improved. But when dissimilar things are mixed with destructible things, their [power] is diminished, not increased. For this reason, therefore, they assimilated Saturn (which cools) to the heat of the day, and Mars (which dries) to the moisture of the night; thus, because of this, the complexion of each will be tempered and will be likened to the quality of a temperate complexion.
Likewise the Moon and the three wandering stars planets placed above the sun the superior planets: Mars, Jupiter, Saturn take on a decrease and increase in their own powers according to the figures they form in relation to the sun. For the Moon, from her first crescent until her first "dichotomy" the first quarter phase, is moistened; and from there until the full moon, she heats; and from there until the second dichotomy the last quarter, she dries; then until she is hidden and exists directly [in line] with the sun, she cools. The stars planets, however, when they are morning stars—from the time they appear from under the rays of the sun until their first station—are more moistening; and from their first station until their evening rising, they heat more; and from there until the second station, they dry more; and from that point until their hiding combustion, they cool more. It is also clear that when these different qualities are mixed with one another, they work in the air in many ways according to the victory dominance of each one's particular strength.
When the treatise concerning the natures of the stars, which they take on according to the property of their effects, follows the aforementioned things, let us begin these following matters: let us record their variations found through experience, from which we shall indicate their similarities to the wandering stars planets. And first, indeed, we shall set down the memory of those which are in the figures of the circle of signs the Zodiac itself. ¶ Therefore, the powers of the stars existing in the head of Aries are likened to the mixed powers of Saturn and Mars. The powers of those which are in the mouth of the same [sign] are said to be similar to the powers of Mercury, although also in a small [measure]...
