its form and building: It will appear and be born by the will of God.
When the child is born complete, it has the hands and face of the mother above its knees, and is joined by the mother's umbilical cord; it flees the food from which it is nourished. If it is a male, its face will be turned toward the mother's kidneys. If it is a female, its face will be turned toward the mother's belly. Therefore, when a male emerges, he will have his face raised toward Heaven; a female, however, toward the earth. When, therefore, it exits from the darkness of the womb, it is because of the squeezing it suffers and the pushing of the wind existing in the mother's belly; it sneezes and emits cries of pain. And afterward, if the birth was by day, it raises its eyes to the light of the sun. If by night, to the light of a candle or another light. And it marvels at the state in which it is and that in which it was before.
God also provided that it should have care for itself and fear in its heart: And we see this through experience. When we lift little ones from the earth into the air, they always hold onto us or our clothes; if they cannot do this, they emit cries. And this is the first thing that God placed in its heart and in the Brain: And also the right-handed intellect original: "intellectū diextu vnutē", likely referring to instinctive coordination or natural faculty by which the infant seeks to be suckled by milk and to suck the breasts; and also to weep because of one who offends it and to be quiet with the one who nourishes it. Therefore, let God be glorified, who by His wisdom does such wonders which man cannot attain. Blessed also be His name. For He Himself gives life and death when He wills.
When you wish to know the Ascending Degree and its Minute: the hour of birth: and the stay of the newborn in the mother's womb, through this direct the ascending degree and the planets. Afterward, look at the Moon: if it is between the ascending degree and the descending degree under the earth. Take the degrees existing from the descending degree to the degree of the Moon and double that: Then divide the doubled amount by 24. And what remains after the division will be hours: And what appears in the quotient will be days. These you ought to add to the 273 days, by which the average stay in the womb is signified: and what results will be the stay of the newborn in the mother's womb. If, however, you find the Moon between the ascending degree and the descending degree above the earth: Take the degrees which are from the descending degree to the degree of the Moon and double them. Then divide the doubled amount by 24: And what comes out will be days, and what remains will be hours: These days and hours you ought to add to the shorter stay, which is 258 days. And what results will be the stay of the newborn in the mother's womb. From which it appears that the average stay is greater than the shorter stay by 15 days. If you add these to the average stay, the longer stay will result, which contains 282 days. If, therefore, you find the Moon in the degree of the East the Ascendant or the West the Descendant: The stay in the mother's womb will be 288 days.
Direct the ascendant according to your ability as you wish. Then take the degrees which are from the descending degree to the degree of the moon: join these with the degrees of the equation placed in the table of the direct circle and divide the sum by 12: And what remains will be the mean motion of the sun: to which you ought to add 258. And what results after the addition will be the stay of the newborn in the mother's womb. Then extract from the mean motion of the sun held at the hour of exit from the mother's womb its motion during the stay of the days of the newborn in the mother's womb, and what remains will be the mean motion of the sun. Afterward, verify that mean motion and where you find the sun: look at how many hours of the day there are. Then multiply those by the time of the hours: Afterward, you will find the ascending degree: To which the degree of the Moon should agree at birth: and then see what the degree of the Moon will be then. And then project from the degree of that ascendant. And that which comes out from the multiplication of the hours: Return to equal hours: which you will add with the mean motion of the Moon in the hour in which the sun begins to ascend on that day. Afterward, direct the place of the moon in its sign: And know that the newborn whose stay in the mother's womb was from the average stay to the longer stay will have in its body some likeness which will be added: In some member of its body. And the newborn whose stay was toward the shorter stay will have in some member of its body a diminution or defect.
Another way concerning the stay of the newborn in the mother's womb. Direct the Moon at the hour of birth and know its place. Then direct it for one whole year after birth: And for one year before birth: Which being done, consider the three aforesaid places: and if they look upon each other in a trine aspect an astrological aspect of 120 degrees, considered harmonious: The stay of the newborn in the mother's womb was 9 months: and then the newborn shall live, by the will of God. If, however, it does not look upon itself, the newborn stayed in the womb for eight months. If two of the aforesaid places do not look upon each other, the stay of the newborn in the womb was 7 months. When, therefore, you have the hour of the falling of the seed into the womb and the stay of the newborn in the womb: direct the planets and their places, beginning the months from the hour in which the seed fell into the womb. These things having been explained, let us pass to the significance of the months according to the order of the planets: And we have already said that Saturn has the disposition of the first month from the falling of the seed into the womb.
When Saturn is strong in that month, and in its own house, exaltation, triplicity, term, or face these are technical "essential dignities" in astrology that measure a planet's strength: That seed will be light, and it will free the pregnant woman from pain and sickness harming her. And that seed will be raised to the upper parts of the belly, and her breath will be quiet and her manners beautiful. And if Saturn is in the term of Jupiter, the pregnant woman will rejoice in her pregnancy, having good thoughts and confidence in God, because He will deliver her; she will be healthy in body and of good breath, hoping that the end of that pregnancy will be good. If it is in the term of Mars: many heats and sicknesses will invade her, and she will have many changes in her body; and she will see menstrual blood in her pregnancy and have pains in the inner part of the belly, and her pregnancy will be on the right side. If it is in the term of Venus: she will be glad, and she will have the seed safe in that pregnancy, with strength and health: and her color will be beautiful, and beauty will appear in her face. If in the term or house of Mercury: she will be light in that pregnancy and rejoicing, with much change and little rest: as long as that pregnancy lasts, she will recount the months and days of her pregnancy and birth. If Saturn is in its descent debilitated, diminished in number in its house or term, the breath of the pregnant woman will be narrow: and she will have distress in her chest, and in that pregnancy thought and pain with little joy: and her soul will not be quiet: but she will fear much for her soul and have bad dreams, and see fearful things while sleeping and waking: And she will be daily thinking of death: and she will weigh her birth heavily: pain will descend to the inner parts of the belly: neither fear nor weeping will be removed from her until after the birth. And if Saturn, being in the same disposition, is in the term of Mars: the pregnant woman will have hot and moist and bloody pains: but she will be rejoicing and of much movement. And if Saturn, thus disposed, is in the house or term of Jupiter: the pregnant woman will suffer a windy and hot sickness. But the end of her birth will be healthy and strong then. And if Saturn, thus disposed, is in the term of Venus: the joy of the pregnant woman will be diminished: and she would wish that she were not pregnant: yet her end will be good: and her birth healthy. And if Saturn, thus disposed, is in the term of Mars or with the Tail of the Dragon the South Node of the Moon, usually considered malefic: Fear will invade the pregnancy, so that the fetus may perish in the womb: unless God should wish to preserve it.
Jupiter has the disposition of the 2nd month from the falling of the seed into the womb, and he signifies faith, sense, intellect, and knowledge. When, therefore, in the second month he is strong and in his ascension (that is, ascending in his circle) and increasing in number: he will dispose the sense of the newborn and its simplicity, intellect, and wisdom: and according to his ascension and elevation, he will dispose in it wisdom and faith in its words: and will give it knowledge which it has not heard, nor has anyone taught you. And if with this he is in his apogee: it signifies that he will be a reciter of things which others do not know: and he will place roots in them from himself: he will speak with providence: and then he will be reputed a prophet. And if he is in his own house, it signifies that the newborn will be wise in the Books of faith. And if he is in his exaltation, the newborn will provoke men to faith: He will teach them the wonders of the saints: Especially if he is in Sagittarius. And if Jupiter is in the house or term of Mars: the newborn will destroy men and provoke them to killings and wars. And if he is in the house or term of Venus: The newborn will be a speaker and preacher: he will be beautifully speaking and a singer: So that by his singing and words he will provoke men to tears. And if he is in the house or term of Mercury: The newborn will attract men to himself by the pleasantness of his words and their sagacity. And if he is in the house or term of Saturn, he will be an experimenter: and will seek to do wonders upon men and show them marvels by lies, which is his art. And if Jupiter is in his descent: it signifies the detriment of the newborn and the smallness of its intellect; nor does it do or say anything except what it has heard and seen from others. And this will be according to its descent...
