...will behold him who was falling from it. And so, when three days are completed, the newborn will begin to suck milk and recognize its mother, and will begin to perceive taste in the sweetness of the milk. After three years, he will begin to walk on his own feet and speak; and his intellect will increase. And in another 7 days, the Moon will complete another part of the circle and change its complexion. The signs will signify by their nature the abundance or scarcity of milk, and the weakness or strength of the nursing. ¶ When the newborn has passed 7 days and there is confidence of good [planetary] support, he will have good nutrition and a long stay in this world, and will be free from evil diseases. Then, if he is the son of a Jew or a Moor original: "mauri"; likely referring to Muslims/Saracens, he shall be circumcised. ¶ And if he is the son of a Christian, he shall be baptized or catechized. ¶ And when the newborn reaches 7 years, then he shall discern and receive the teaching of the heavens and his own life and matters of faith. ¶ In 40 years, he will complete the years of strength and nature, after which he will begin to decline daily until he completes the life which God gave. ¶ Know that when the Moon is 3 days from the falling angles cadent houses and is joined to a fortune by conjunction or aspect, it signifies a scarcity of milk and difficulty in nutrition. ¶ When the significator of nutrition is an infortune, specifically Saturn, and he is peregrine a planet in a position where it has no essential dignity/strength, it signifies the destruction of the newborn and that he will live in a disordered way. ¶ The Sun in a daytime birth existing in the term of Saturn signifies that there will be labor and foulness in the nutrition of the newborn. ¶ When Saturn and Mars cast their rays upon the term of the Ascendant, they signify misfortune and [poor] nutrition. ¶ When the Part of Fortune is misfortuned in the 4th house, it signifies bad nutrition. ¶ When the Lord of the Ascendant and the Lord of Nutrition are bound with the Part of Fortune, and none of them is strong in its place, they signify the damnation of the nourishment. ¶ When the Part of Fortune is in the 11th house and its Lord is without reception, the newborn will be difficult to nourish and will add evil upon evil. ¶ When the Moon is separated from an infortune, it signifies many diseases for the newborn during the time of nursing, and he will have labor in his nourishment, and the newborn will have wounds in his body and pains in the blood.
¶ The first face of Aries signifies diseases in nutrition and the pain of the stone kidney or bladder stones, and that rot shall exit from his flesh. ¶ The second face of Aries will multiply disease, but he will be protected from them and healed. ¶ He who is born in the 3rd face of Aries will fall ill after 5 months from birth. ¶ He who is born in the first face of Taurus, pains and diseases will invade him for a year and a half, persisting until he reaches the end of his life. And when he is 30 months old, he will have hot pains. And when he is six years old, he will have disordered diseases and things regarding the blood. ¶ He who is born in the 2nd face of Taurus will be healthy until 7 years from birth have passed, and then diseases will invade him, but by the will of God, he will be freed from them. ¶ He who is born in the first face of Gemini will fall ill with a great disease for 5 months from birth. And when he is one year and a half, he will fall from one disease into another until 3 and a half years, and then the itch scabies/skin rash will invade him. ¶ For him born in the 2nd face of Gemini, from the second month of his age, diseases will not be removed from him until he reaches a year and a half. And when he is four years old, he will fall ill with such a disease that his death will be doubted. ¶ He who is born in the 3rd face of Leo will be sick after six months from birth, and wounds will appear in his flesh and the pain of the stone; nor will it be removed from him until he reaches the 7th year of his age. ¶ He who is born in the 2nd face of Leo, and also the 3rd, will be ill for 7 years from the hour of birth, counting daily. ¶ He who is born in the first face of Libra will be nourished by the milk of two women. And when he is three months of age, pains will find him. When nine months have passed, he will have a flow of blood from the nostrils. ¶ When he reaches the first face within a year and a half, he will fall ill with a disease; from which when he is healed, pains in the head will invade him for two years, 6 months, and 20 days. ¶ He who is born in the first face of Scorpio, after 5 years from birth, pains will invade him. He who is born in the 1st face of Sagittarius, after 25 months from birth, will have great diseases so that his death will be doubted; and for 10 months he will be sick in the head, but will be freed by a flow of the belly diarrhea/purging. ¶ When he enters the tenth year, he will fall ill with a heavy disease, from which if he prevails, he will live long. ¶ He who is born in the 1st face of Sagittarius Note: the text repeats the sign, likely a scribal error for a different face or sign, when he reaches 4 months of his birth, diseases will invade him. And when he reaches the second year, he will be sick with a disease; from which if he prevails, he will be of long life. ¶ He who is born in the 3rd face of Sagittarius, pains and diseases will invade him until 4 months of his age have passed. And if he prevails, he will live much. ¶ He who is born in the first face of Capricorn, his death will be doubted until two years from his birth have passed. ¶ He who is born in the 3rd face of Capricorn will be sick with a disease and will have many flatulences, and his parents will die; a strange woman will nourish him. ¶ He who is born in the first face of Aquarius will fall ill after 10 months from birth and will live after this, and will have sufficient nutrition. ¶ He who is born in the 2nd face of Aquarius will fall ill with a disease after 6 months from birth. ¶ He who is born in the 3rd face of Aquarius, disease will not be removed from him until 7 years from his birth have passed; afterward he will be healed and his life will be prolonged.
¶ Look at the Moon: if she is with a fortune in any of the angles or succedent houses, and an infortune is [absent], the newborn will be nourished. But his mother will look after him. ¶ If this Moon is in the term of an infortune, both parents will provide for him. ¶ If Mars in a daytime birth is in the 4th sign after the Sun, and the Moon is peregrine and beholds him from the 7th house, the newborn will be protected. ¶ And in the same way, you shall judge by Saturn in a nighttime birth.
¶ It should be held that separation from an infortune signifies the beauty of nourishment and that the newborn will be fortunate among brothers and the works of his brothers will be directed. ¶ If a fortune is with the Moon so that Jupiter beholds her in a daytime birth and Venus in a nighttime birth, it signifies beauty of nourishment; especially if the said planet is oriental and in a masculine sign in a daytime birth: his strength will be firm and healthy in the matter of nourishment. And say the same for a planet being occidental and in a feminine sign in a nighttime birth. ¶ And just as we judge the beauty of nourishment by the Part of Fortune, so we can judge by the Part of Absence. ¶ The Part of Absence is taken in the day from the Moon to the Sun, and in the night the opposite, and is projected from the Ascendant; and wherever the term falls, there the said part shall be. If it is with the Moon or any of the fortunes, or beholds the Moon, the newborn will be of beautiful stature and nutrition, and his teeth will grow without pain.
¶ The Hyleg The "giver of life," a specific point in a birth chart used to determine longevity. signifies the life of the newborn and the Alcochoden The "giver of years," the planet that rules the Hyleg and determines the number of years a person might live. signifies the years. And by its Athazir A method of progression or moving points in the chart over time. toward the aspect of fortunes or infortunes, you shall know the life and death of the newborn by the will of God. ¶ And know that the wise men extract the Hyleg from 5 places. ¶ First from the Sun, 2nd from the Moon, 3rd from the sign of the Ascendant, 4th from the Part of Fortune, and 5th from the place of the conjunction or prevention the New or Full Moon preceding the birth. ¶ When the birth is by day, let us begin first from the Sun, because it rules the present times and is the light of the day. ¶ If the birth is by night, let us begin first from the Moon, which is the light of the night and possesses the ordering of the night. ¶ If the Sun in a daytime birth is in the Ascendant, or the 10th, or the 11th house (which is the house of confidence and fortune), whether the sign be masculine or feminine, it is fit to be the Hyleg, provided the Lord of the House, Exaltation, Triplicity, or Term beholds it. ¶ But if none of these Lords behold it, the Sun cannot be the Hyleg. ¶ And if the Sun is not in these places, but in the 7th, 8th, or 9th house in a masculine sign, it will be fit to be the Hyleg, provided any of the aforesaid Lords behold it. ¶ Ptolemy, however, does not want the Sun existing in the 8th house to be the Hyleg; but if it is in the 4th house and in a masculine sign, it is fit to be the Hyleg, provided any of the aforesaid Lords behold it. ¶ In the same way, Ptolemy denies that the Moon in the 8th house can be the Hyleg, but it may be in the holy places the other houses mentioned provided it is in a feminine sign and any of the aforesaid Lords behold it. ¶ When the Sun is the Hyleg, the planet beholding it will be the Alcochoden. ¶ In nighttime births, we begin first from the Moon, as was said: if she is in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 8th house and in a feminine sign, she will be fit to be the Hyleg, provided any of the aforesaid Lords behold her. And the one who beholds her is called the Alcochoden. ¶ Afterward, seek the Athazir of the Hyleg and its aspect to the fortunes or infortunes and their rays. ¶ But if the Sun and Moon are not fit to be the Hyleg, see whether the degree of the Ascendant is free from infortunes, and its Lord is strong and free, and existing in the angles or succedents, not retrograde nor falling nor combust; then it will be fit to be the Hyleg, and from this take the Athazir. ¶ But if the degree of the Ascendant cannot be the Hyleg, look at the Part of Fortune: if it is in the angles or succedents and free from infortunes, and any of the aforesaid Lords behold it, it will be fit to be the Hyleg, and the one beholding it the Alcochoden; then from that take the Athazir and the times through it. ¶ But if the Part of Fortune is not fit to be the Hyleg, look at the conjunction or prevention which preceded the birth of the newborn. And if it is free from the impediments we have mentioned, and any of its Lords behold it, it will be fit to be the Hyleg. ¶ Look therefore at the degree in...
