From wherever the conjunction or prevention The "prevention" refers to the Full Moon preceding birth; the "conjunction" refers to the New Moon. occurred, take the Athazir Athazir: a method of progression or "moving" a point in the chart over time to predict events from that point, just as we said regarding the degrees of the Ascendant: giving one year to each degree. And if the Athazir reaches a "malefic" original: "infortunā"; refers to Mars or Saturn and a "benefic" original: "fortuna"; refers to Jupiter or Venus does not cast an aspect there: the native shall die in that year. Certain wise men have said that if in a daytime birth the Sun cannot be the Hyleg Hyleg: the "Giver of Life," a specific planet or point used to determine the lifespan, we ought to look to the Moon: which, if it be in the Ascendant or in the "angles" The 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses or in a place where it has some dignity, and is in a feminine sign, it will be fit to be the Hyleg. And similarly in a nocturnal birth: when the Moon cannot be the Hyleg, look to the Sun when it is in the "angle of the earth" The 4th house, the lowest point of the chart. If it is in the 5th house, it will be a fit Hyleg, and then look for the Alcocoden Alcocoden: the planet that determines the number of years the Hyleg grants. Dorotheus said: When none of the other five aforementioned points can be the Hyleg, and the Part of Fortune is in the Ascendant and its lord is fortunate within the Ascendant after the 25th degree of the angle, it shall be fit to be the Hyleg. Also, if the Sun and Moon are in the 9th house and are not afflicted by malefics, they shall be fit to be Hyleg, provided that in a daytime birth the Sun is in a masculine sign and the Moon in a feminine one, and they are in their own houses or places where they have some dignity: as if Leo were ascending and the Sun in Aries, or Cancer ascending and the Moon in Pisces. For when they are in their own house, exaltation, triplicity, or term, they possess strength. Regarding the Hyleg, however, whether it is taken from the degree of the Ascendant, the Part of Fortune, or the preceding conjunction or opposition of the birth, we ought not to look at whether the sign is masculine or feminine, or whether the birth was by day or night. But rather, whether its lords aspect the Hyleg itself. Therefore, when you have the Hyleg, calculate its Athazir to the locations of the malefics; for whenever it reaches a square original: "4." or opposite aspect of a malefic, and a benefic does not project its rays there, the death of the native is to be feared. But if a benefic projects its rays to that place (that is, to the malefic), the native will suffer some great impediment or sickness, but at last shall be delivered by the will of God. Others, however, have said that if in a daytime birth the Sun cannot be Hyleg, nor the Moon in a nocturnal birth, and the birth was "conjunctional" Born following a New Moon, then we ought to take the degree of the Ascendant. And if it was "preventional" Born following a Full Moon, take the Part of Fortune and work with the Athazir as Ptolemy said: because although the Moon may not be the Hyleg, it is still necessary that its Athazir be calculated toward the benefics or malefics. For when it reaches a malefic, it will do one of two things: either induce an evil similar to death, or it will kill the effect of the benefics; if it signifies death, it will assist it. For when the Moon is Hyleg and the degree of the Ascendant in the root of the nativity is afflicted, and it comes together with the Moon or Sun or a conjunction of a malefic at the time of birth, the native will be in danger of death. If the degree of the Ascendant is Hyleg and is afflicted in the root of the nativity, or joins itself with the lord of the Ascendant or of the conjunction when afflicted: the native shall have a great sickness, so that his death shall be doubted. If you calculate the Athazir by the degrees of the conjunction or prevention toward the aspects of the benefics and malefics, and the Athazir joins itself with one of the malefics, the death of the native is to be feared. And when the Athazir joins itself to the "term" A specific subdivision of a zodiac sign of a malefic, it will kill someone, or induce an evil similar to killing; unless a strong benefic aspects that same term, or the Sun, being strong in the nativity, reaches that point with which the malefic is joined. For that shall signify deliverance by the will of God. When you find the Hyleg, and one of the lords having dignity in the Hyleg aspects it, make that planet the Alcocoden; and according to the strength of its position, it will give years, and also its power to which it has given its strength through conjunction or aspect. But if none of the aforesaid lords aspects the Hyleg, the native shall have no Alcocoden; you should then calculate the Alcafir Another method of time-distribution with the degree of the Ascendant from the place of the malefics. And when it reaches a malefic signifying the death of the native, that shall be the term of the native's death. And some have treated the Hyleg as they did the Alcocoden, by adding or subtracting years according to those aspecting the Hyleg. And know that if the lord of the house of the Hyleg aspects it, he is to be preferred over the lord of the exaltation; and the lord of the triplicity over the lord of the term; and the lord of the term shall act as the Alcocoden. Thus, whichever planet has more dignities in the place of the Hyleg is more fit to be the Alcocoden than another who has fewer dignities. Know therefore that if the Alcocoden is in the 10th or 1st house, strong and free from malefics, and also in its own house, exaltation, triplicity, or term: it will give the native its "great years." And if it is a "pilgrim" A planet with no essential dignity in its current position in said places, it will give its "middle years." And if it is retrograde, or combust Too close to the Sun, thus weakened, or afflicted,
it will give its "lesser years." But if it is in the 4th, 5th, or 11th house, and in its own house, exaltation, triplicity, or term, it will give the native its lesser years. But if it is retrograde or combust, or in its "fall" The sign opposite its exaltation, or afflicted, it will give months instead of lesser years. And if it is in the 6th, 12th, or 9th house, yet strong and "received" A relationship where one planet is in the dignity of another and free from malefics, it will give 6 months for its lesser years. But if in said places it is retrograde or combust or afflicted: it will give days or hours instead of its lesser years. For if the planets aspecting the Alcocoden are in the Ascendant, 10th, or 7th house, it will give its lesser years. For if they are in the 5th, 10th, or 4th, and also in their own houses, exaltations, triplicities, or terms, they shall offer their lesser years. But if they are retrograde, combust, or afflicted: they will give months instead of their lesser years. And if they are in the angles or "succedent" houses The 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 11th houses, and also retrograde, combust, or impeded, or in their fall as was said: they shall give days or hours instead of lesser years. Work therefore in this manner, adding with the benefics and subtracting with the malefics: and the benefics, through conjunction, sextile, or trine aspect, add to the years of the native. Malefics, however, through conjunction, square, or opposition, subtract. Abucussa Likely a reference to Al-Qabisi (Alcabitius) said: When you see the Alcocoden "pushing" A technical term for the transfer of planetary influence its power to another, and that planet is very strong, leave the Alcocoden and take that other planet instead of the Alcocoden; especially if it has received it, and has not returned its light and its order. This "pushing" is like one who promises to give something to another. "Reception" is like one who receives a gift. And he who "returns" is like one who cannot keep the gift he received. For if the Alcocoden pushes its power to a planet in the Ascendant or one having dignity in the Hyleg, assign the significance to it; provided that it does not push its power to another, but refers its power back to the Alcocoden itself. Certain wise men said that when a planet is in its own dignity and in the angles and is "occidental" Setting after the Sun, it will give its middle years. But if it is retrograde or afflicted, or "under the rays" Close to the Sun, but not yet combust, it will give its lesser years, unless it is separated from the Sun. And if it is in the Ascendant or the Midheaven, it will give its lesser years, but only if it has no dignity there. And if it is in the 4th or 7th house and has some power there, or is "oriental" Rising before the Sun, it will also give its lesser years. But if it has no dignity there, it shall offer its middle years. For the Alcocoden being in the 5th or 11th house and being oriental will give its middle years. If it is invisible, it shall offer its lesser years. For the Alcocoden being strong in the 9th house and having dignity there, if it is oriental, it will give its middle years. But if it is a pilgrim there, it will offer its lesser years. And say the same if it is in the 3rd house: except that the 3rd house is less strong than the 9th. And if the Alcocoden is in the 6th or 12th house and at the end of its strength or dignity, it will give its lesser years. But if it is weakened in said houses, it shall offer months; if retrograde or pilgrim, days; if combust, hours. When a malefic, from a square or opposite aspect, aspects the "significator of life" The Hyleg, it shall subtract its own years from the years given. And if said malefic aspects the significator by a trine or sextile aspect and from a good place, you shall add its lesser years to the years given. And if a benefic aspects it by any aspect, it shall subtract nothing from the years given, but shall always add. When the Head of the Dragon Head of the Dragon: the North Node of the Moon is with the Alcocoden, it shall subtract a fourth part of the years. Know that retrograde planets, due to the weakness of their significations, do neither good nor evil. For if benefics are in the opposite of their own houses, or in the opposite of malefics, they shall offer no good, but rather evil. And know that malefics are said to be worse when one aspects the other by an opposite aspect. When the Alcocoden has given certain years to the native and has verified them, a malefic cannot destroy those years. But if the Alcocoden is retrograde or afflicted, that malefic shall have those years, which will be contrary to the native. If malefics have dominion over the Alcocoden from the angles, and there is a space greater than their "body" The physical diameter or orb of the planet between them, they shall not subtract their years; rather they shall add. But the native shall be led into innumerable dangers. A benefic shall not add to the years of the Alcocoden from the angles unless it receives the Alcocoden and the Alcocoden receives it; otherwise there will be no addition or subtraction.
