¶ Know that the nature and character of the newborn are distinguished according to the significations and natures of the 7 planets in their forms and habits. ¶ For Saturn, by its own nature, signifies laziness, foolishness, foulness, fear, servitude, injury, lying, sadness, and an evil will of the heart. ¶ Jupiter, by its own nature, signifies law, faith, science, humility, shame In the sense of modesty or bashfulness., fidelity, liberty, patience, sense, sobriety, and a clear face. ¶ Mars, by its own nature, signifies wrath, nausea Likely meaning "loathing" or "disgust" in this context., violence, prodigality, heat, theft, shamelessness, and joy. ¶ The Sun, by its own nature, signifies strength, sublimity, probity, and great power. ¶ Venus, by its own nature, signifies humility, piety, good will, love of the heart, joy, and good character—except that the newborn will be considered effeminate and unbridled. ¶ Mercury, by its own nature, signifies trade, speech, the recitation of histories, intellect, speed of speech, grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, and astrology. ¶ The Moon, by its own nature, signifies a heavy gait, weakness, misery, journeys, whisperings, and the meddling of evil. ¶ And these significations of the planets will be strong or weak according to the strength or weakness of the planets in themselves and in their places. ¶ Therefore, when any of the planets is in the Ascendant or the Midheaven, it will give the newborn character and form according to its strength; but if an inimical planet should behold it i.e., form an astrological aspect., it will change the given character according to the strength or weakness of that beholding planet. ¶ But if the said planets are not inimical to each other by aspect, then the character given by the first planet will be strengthened. So that if the first planet gave the newborn modesty, he will be so modest that he will hardly dare to speak; and so it is to be judged concerning the other significations of character signified by the planets. ¶ But when the said planets are inimical to each other by aspect or by nature, one renders its signification over the other, and one changes the character and properties of the other, as you can see here: for in the birth of one who is without fear or bold, you will find Mars in the Ascendant or in another strong place. ¶ And if the Moon or the Lord of the Ascendant should behold it and be in a strong place so that it has some dignity there, the newborn will be a lord and a master of soldiers, of great boldness, and will appear of great virtues; his boldness coming from the heart, he will desire to kill with his hand, he will love violence and infamy, he will be a traitor of a hard and ferocious heart, walking with a wide and long stride. ¶ And if Saturn should behold him, it will give him a heart of evil thoughts, fear, laziness, misery, heaviness of heart, coarseness, and sadness in his affairs. ¶ And if Jupiter should behold Mars, it will break his wrath and diminish his fury, and make him descend;
