‘The Paulisha, Romaka, Vasishtha,
Surya, and Paitamaha are the five astronomical systems Siddhantas; astronomical treatises.
Of these five, the first two
were explained by Latadeva.
The one composed by Pulisha is accurate,
and the Romaka is said to be close to it.
The Surya system is even more precise,
while the remaining two have strayed far from accuracy.’
original: "पौलिशरोमकवाशिष्ठ..." This verse is from Varahamihira’s Panchasiddhantika, a 6th-century text summarizing five lost astronomical traditions.
Shri Sudhakara Dvivedi, at the beginning of his commentary titled Prakashika The "Illuminator", has quoted several verses from the Suryaruna-samvada The Dialogue between the Sun and Aruna. Regarding those five systems, the description is as follows: “The original knowledge in the form of the Vedanga The "limbs" of the Vedas; auxiliary sciences was received by Paitamaha-Brahma The Creator deity, who gave it to his son Vasishtha. Vishnu gave that knowledge to us (the Sun), and that became famous by the name Surya Siddhanta. I gave that system to Maya. Vasishtha gave that supreme knowledge to his own son Parashara—that is the Vasishtha Siddhanta. Pulisha explained the system he created to sages such as Garga. I (the Sun), having been born into the Yavana Greek or Western race due to a curse, explained the Romaka Siddhanta to Romaka. Romaka propagated it in his own city. These are the five types of ancient mathematics.”
In the footnotes of this, Dvivedi has written—The Brahma Siddhanta was composed near the time of the composition of the Vedanga Jyotisha. Vasishtha made this famous under the name Paitamaha Siddhanta. Thus, it appears that the Vasishtha Siddhanta was created near the time of the Brahma Siddhanta. The Brahma Siddhanta is approximate literally "gross" or less precise, and compared to it, the Vasishtha Siddhanta is subtle. Both
