Muhurta-Grantha 6 Prescribed Actions
Singing, dancing, as well as matters concerning fields agriculture or land acquisition, painting, festivals, and the construction of houses; the wearing of new clothes and ornaments, and various crafts—these are considered auspicious when performed on Nanda the "Joyous" lunar days. || 7 ||
Marriage, the thread ceremony Upanayana, a rite of passage for students, travel, jewelry making, and artistic works; activities involving elephants, horses, and chariots—these bring success when performed on Bhadra the "Lucky" lunar days. || 8 ||
Military affairs, battle, weaponry, travel, festivals, and house-building; medicine and commerce—these are successfully accomplished on Jaya the "Victorious" lunar days. || 9 ||
The imprisonment of enemies, the use of poisons, weapons, and fire should be carried out on Rikta the "Empty" lunar days; however, one should never perform any auspicious or benevolent ceremony on these days. || 10 ||
Vows, marriage, travel, royal coronations, and rituals for peace or nourishment—these are indeed fulfilled on Purna the "Full" lunar days. || 11 ||
Now, the generally auspicious and inauspicious lunar days are described:
The second, fifth, third, and seventh; the tenth, eleventh, prescribed? first, and the thirteenth— || 12 ||
And the Full Moon—these lunar days are conducive to success in all undertakings. Other days are generally not desired, though some authorities consider them auspicious in specific ritual contexts. || 13 ||
The fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, the first day of the bright fortnight, and the New Moon day—one should make an effort to avoid these for auspicious works. || 14 ||
Now, the Paksha-randhra literally "clefts of the fortnight," these are specific lunar days considered volatile or "pierced" and thus generally avoided for major beginnings lunar days:
The fourth, sixth, eighth, ninth, twelfth, and fourteenth—these lunar days are known as Paksha-randhra and should be abandoned in all ceremonies. || 15 ||
In these specific dates—the 8th, 9th, 14th, 25th likely referring to the 10th of the dark fortnight, 10th, and 5th—certain portions of the day are particularly harmful. One should avoid the beginning portions as prescribed, while the remaining parts are considered good. || 16 ||
