Now, the portions to be avoided in the inauspicious Yogas:
One should avoid the entirety of the Yogas named Vaidhriti and Vyatipada for any auspicious activity. In Vajra and Vishkambha, avoid the first three ghatikas A ghatika is a unit of time equal to 24 minutes; three ghatikas equal 72 minutes. (4) Avoid the first half of Parigha; nine ghatikas in Shula and Vyaghata; and six ghatikas in Ganda and Atiganda. These are to be avoided in all rituals. (5) This is the general rule remembered for these Yogas. Some authorities, however, simply discard the first quarter of any inauspicious Yoga. (6)
Thus ends the Chapter on Yogas in the Muhurta Gananayati, composed by Gananayati, the son of the learned scholar Daivajña Ravala Harishankara. (5)
Now, the Chapter on the Karanas:
The Karanas Karana: half of a lunar day (tithi). There are 11 types in total are: Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, and Vishti—these are the seven [mobile Karanas]. (1) Take the elapsed lunar days, multiply by two, and count from the first day of the bright fortnight. The Karana Bava begins the sequence in the first half of the day. (2) In the second half of the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight, the Karana is Shakuni. On the New Moon day, the two halves are Chatushpada and Naga respectively. (3) In the first half of the first day of the bright fortnight, the Karana is named Kimstughna. These four [Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, and Kimstughna] are known as the "Fixed" Karanas. (4)
Now, the Lords of the Karanas:
Indra, Brahma, Mitra, Aryaman, Bhumi (Earth), Shri (Lakshmi), Yama, Kali, the Sun, the Serpent (Naga), and Vayu (Wind) are the presiding deities of the Karanas. (5) In Bava, perform acts for nourishment and growth; in Balava, perform rituals related to Brahmins. In Kaulava, activities related to women and friends are favored; in Taitila, acts that are auspicious and dear.
