original: "नाड्यश्चैत्र विनाडिका:..." This verse provides a mnemonic for the "Nakshatra Shuddhi" or verification of the birth star using the "Ishta Kala" (time elapsed since sunrise).
original: "शुद्धास्ता विघटो:..." This verse explains "Lagna Shuddhi" (rectification of the Ascendant) using the position of the Moon and the mathematical point Mandi.
(a) Verification of the Birth Star—Multiply the ghatis ghati: a unit of time equal to 24 minutes and palas pala: a unit of time equal to 24 seconds of the desired time by four (4), and divide the result by nine (9). Count the remainder starting from Ashvini, Magha, or Mula (whichever group the star falls into) to find the birth star.
Suppose a person was born on August 7, 1608, at a desired time of 58 ghatis and 16 palas. Therefore:
(58 — 16) × 4
__________________________ The remainder is 8 ⁴/₆₀ stars.
9
Thus, the person's birth will be in the ninth star: Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, or Revati.
In Hindu astrology, the 27 stars are divided into three groups of nine starting with Ashvini, Magha, and Mula.
(b) Verification of Male-Female Birth—Convert the ghatis and palas of the desired time entirely into palas. Divide them by 225. If the remainder is between 0 and 15, the birth is male; if it is more than 15 up to 45, it is female; if above 45 but up to 60, it is male again; if above 60 up to 150, it is female; and if above 150 up to 225, it is understood to be a male birth.
If the desired time is 58 ghatis and 16 palas, then 58 × 60 + 16 = 3496. Dividing 3496 by 225 leaves a remainder of 121; therefore, the birth will be female.
(c) Verification of the Ascendant—Calculate the zodiac signs occupied by Mandi Mandi is a mathematical point or "shadow planet" used in Vedic astrology for rectification and the Moon, as well as their Navamsha Navamsha: the ninth-division of a zodiac sign signs. A human birth will occur in the sign occupied by Mandi or the Moon. Alternatively, it will occur in the seventh, fifth, or ninth sign from these two. If the Navamsha sign of Mandi or the Moon is stronger than the primary sign, the birth-ascendant occurs in that strong Navamsha sign or in the seventh, fifth, or ninth from it.
