Libra and Capricorn are movable signs Sanskrit: Chara Rashi; these signs represent change and motion. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius are fixed signs Sanskrit: Sthira Rashi; these represent stability. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces are dual-natured signs Sanskrit: Dvisvabhava Rashi; these possess qualities of both movement and stability. The Sun is the significator of the father. Therefore, if the Sun—the father-significator—is in a movable sign, the father will be away on a journey. If it is in a dual-natured sign, he will be on the road, and if it is in a fixed sign, he will be at home.
Similarly, because the Moon is the significator of the mother, it describes the mother's condition. If the Moon is associated with cruel malefic planets, the mother suffers pain during childbirth. The greater the sinful malefic influence on the Moon, the more intense the labor pains should be understood to be.
original: "लग्नेन्द्वन्तरगाः प्रसूतिगृहगा..." This Sanskrit verse outlines how to reconstruct the physical setting of a birth using the positions of the planets.
The number of birth-attendants Upasutika: assistant midwives or female relatives present during labor inside the delivery room corresponds to the number of planets situated between the Ascendant Lagna: the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth and the Moon. The number of women outside the delivery room corresponds to the number of planets outside that arc. The state of the oil is known from the Moon; specifically, the amount of oil remaining in the lamp is estimated by how much of its current sign the Moon has yet to traverse. The knowledge of the lamp's wick is derived from the Ascendant, and the lamp itself is understood through the Sun.
The Sun rules the East, Venus the South-East, Mars the South, Rahu the South-West, Saturn the West, the Moon the North-West, Mercury the North, and Jupiter the North-East. The direction of the door to the delivery room is determined by the strongest planet located in the centers Kendra: the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses of a horoscope. If no planets are in the centers, the direction is determined by the strongest of the cardinal houses themselves.
By casting the Ascendant for the time of birth, astrologers estimate these details to satisfy the client and to verify the accuracy of the birth time. The women who remain as assistants in the delivery room are called Upasutikas. Their number should be stated based on the count of planets between the Ascendant and the Moon. One must keep in mind: if all planets fall between the Ascendant and the Moon, one should only predict five or seven attendants. If any planet is with the Ascendant or the Moon...
