The Sun considers the Moon, Jupiter, and Mars as its friends. The Moon considers the Sun and Mercury as friends. Mars considers the Sun, the Moon, and Jupiter as friends. Mercury considers Venus and the Sun as friends. Jupiter considers the Sun, the Moon, and Mars as friends. Venus considers Mercury and Saturn as friends, and Saturn considers Venus and Mercury as friends. The Sun considers Venus and Saturn as its enemies. The Moon does not consider anyone to be its enemy. Mars considers Mercury as an enemy; Mercury considers the Moon as an enemy; Jupiter considers Venus and Mercury as enemies; Venus considers the Sun and the Moon as enemies; and Saturn considers the Sun, the Moon, and Mars as its enemies. Other planets are mutually neutral Sama: planets that are neither friends nor enemies. One should pronounce results only after determining whether planets are "Great Friends" Adhimitra or "Great Enemies" Adhishatru based on the combination of their Tatkalika (temporary/situational) and Naisargika (natural) friendships.
Commentary—The ancient teachers have provided a formula for observing the mutual enmity and friendship of the planets. That formula is:
original: "मूलत्रिकोणभवनात् चतुर्थपञ्चमधनव्ययाष्टगां स्वोच्चधर्मे च गता ग्रहास्तु तात्कालिका: सुहृद:" The planets situated in the fourth, fifth, second, twelfth, eighth, and ninth houses from a planet's Mula Trikona (root-trine) sign, as well as the planet's sign of exaltation, are considered its temporal friends. (Commentary on Brihat Jataka, Chapter 2).
That is to say, every planet considers the lords of the 5th, 12th, 2nd, 4th, 8th, and 9th signs from its own root-trine sign, as well as its own exaltation point, to be its friends. If the position is otherwise, they are not. The root-trine signs for the Sun and the others are respectively 5 (Leo), 2 (Taurus), 1 (Aries), 6 (Virgo), 9 (Sagittarius), 7 (Libra), and 11 (Aquarius).
Example—For instance, if we wish to ascertain which planets Jupiter forms friendships with, we will consider the positions of the other planets' signs relative to Jupiter’s root-trine sign, Sagittarius.
Sun's Sign (5)—The Sun's sign, Leo, falls ninth from Sagittarius. Since the number 9 is mentioned in the verse, Jupiter considers the Sun a friend.
Moon's Sign (4)—The Moon's sign, Cancer, is eighth from Sagittarius. Since the eighth house is mentioned in the verse, Jupiter considers the Moon a friend.
In this same manner, one should understand the relationships for all planets. Here:
