The twelfth part is called the Dvadashamsha a 2.5-degree division of a zodiac sign and the thirtieth part is called the Trimshamsha a 1-degree division used to determine planetary dignity. These are collectively known as the Saptavarga The Seven Divisions. The names of these divisions are: the Planet the sign itself, Hora half-sign, Drekkana one-third sign, Saptamamsha one-seventh sign, Navamsha one-ninth sign, Dvadashamsha, and Trimshamsha. If the Saptamamsha is removed from this list, they are called the Shadvarga The Six Divisions. If the Dashamsha one-tenth, Shodashamsha one-sixteenth, and Shashtyamsha one-sixtieth are added to these seven, they are called the Dashavarga The Ten Divisions.
original: "मोनस्तौलिगृहं च तुङ्गभवनं तत्र स्थिते खेचरे..." - This is a Sanskrit verse describing the mathematical strength (Bala) of planets based on their zodiacal placement.
From the Sun to Saturn, the Moola-Trikona root-trine or primary dignity signs are: Leo for the Sun, Taurus for the Moon, Aries for Mars, Virgo for Mercury, Sagittarius for Jupiter, Libra for Venus, and Aquarius for Saturn. The exaltation signs are: Aries for the Sun, Taurus for the Moon, Capricorn for Mars, Virgo for Mercury, Cancer for Jupiter, Pisces for Venus, and Libra for Saturn, respectively. When a planet is situated in its exaltation sign, its strength is 1 Rupa a full unit, like a whole Rupee. The strength of that same planet in its Moola-Trikona is 3/4 Rupa. In its own sign (Swakshetra), its strength is 1/2 Rupa; in a friend's sign, 1/4 Rupa; in a "great friend's" sign (Adhimitra), 3/8 Rupa; in an enemy's sign, 1/16 Rupa; and in a "great enemy's" sign (Adhishatru), 3/32 Rupa. In a neutral sign (Sama), the planet's strength is 1/8.
Now a doubt arises: in the sign of Taurus, the Moon is both exalted and in its Moola-Trikona. Similarly, Virgo is Mercury's own house, its exaltation, and its Moola-Trikona all at once. When should they be considered Moola-Trikona and when should they be considered in their own house or exalted?
In this context, let us clarify: the Moon is exalted in the first three degrees Amsha: degrees of a 30-degree zodiac sign of Taurus, and in its Moola-Trikona in the remaining 27 degrees. If Mars is within the first 12 degrees of Aries, it should be understood as being in its Moola-Trikona.
