Meaning: From these [the elements] the universe is born, by these the universe is sustained, and into these it dissolves, remaining thereafter in a subtle form. || 8 ||
The five elements exist within the body made of five elements, O Beautiful One! Addressing Goddess Parvati
They exist in a subtle form and are known by those yogis who understand the elements. || 9 ||
Meaning: O Beautiful One! Within this body created from the five elements Pancha-tattva: the five great elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether, these five elements reside in a subtle state. Only those Yogis who possess the knowledge of the fundamental principles can perceive them. || 9 ||
Now I shall speak of the Breath, the rise of the vowels/sounds residing in the body.
Through the nature of the movement of the 'Hansa' [the breath], knowledge of the three periods of time arises. || 10 ||
Meaning: Now I shall describe the origin of the "Swaras" Swara: literally 'sound' or 'vowel', here referring to the flow of breath through the nostrils situated within the body. By understanding the movement of the breath—symbolized by the 'Hansa' The 'Ham-sa' mantra represents the inhalation and exhalation—one gains knowledge of the past, present, and future. || 10 ||
This is the essence, more secret than the most secret, a revealer of benefits.
This knowledge of the 'Rise of Breath' is the crest-jewel of all forms of knowledge. || 11 ||
Meaning: This science of breath Swarodaya: the study of the flow of breath is the most profound of all hidden mysteries. It reveals great benefits and stands as the crowning jewel among all branches of wisdom. || 11 ||
It is the subtlest of the subtle, easy to understand, and based on truth.
It is a wonder to the atheist and a foundation for the believer. || 12 ||
