Recognizing that ignorance is the primary cause of the various types of suffering endured by humanity, the ancient great seers Rishis, who were dedicated to the welfare of the entire world and committed to removing that ignorance, revealed many systems of philosophy Darshanas through the power of their great penance. Among these, the system of Astrology Jyotisha-darshana holds a significant place. This is indeed one of the "limbs of the Vedas" Vedangas; auxiliary sciences required for the understanding and application of Vedic knowledge.

This science is not only helpful to the Vedic scholars Shrotriyas who are intent on performing Vedic rituals—by determining the appropriate times for such ceremonies—but it is also extremely beneficial to every common person. It assists in achieving success in both worldly and spiritual actions by providing knowledge of the suitable time Muhurta and other factors. This fact is accepted by many discerning people, even those influenced by the impact of modern physical sciences.

It is well known to scholars familiar with this science that there are many important manuscripts related to this "Eye of the Veda" Veda-chakshus; a traditional metaphor for Astrology as it allows one to 'see' the proper time for action—which consists of three branches: Mathematical Astronomy Siddhanta, Omens/General Astrology Samhita, and Natal Astrology Hora—waiting to be published in various places. Among such works is the text named Muhūrtaratna The Jewel of Electional Astrology. This was composed by the eminent scholar Govinda Bhattiri, who was born in Kerala in the 13th century CE and whose name is held in high esteem.
