The significance of Muhurtas auspicious time-windows selected for beginning an activity is already well-established regarding specific Samskaras rites of passage such as Garbhadhana the rite of conception and others. However, Muhurtas also hold a prominent place in the daily life of human beings. It is a matter of common experience in this world that everyone, from the unlearned to the scholar, performs their daily tasks in accordance with the demands of time.
A farmer proceeds with plowing, sowing seeds, and harvesting only by looking toward the designated time. Similarly, in transactions like buying and selling, in the construction or first entry into a house, and in the digging of wells and tanks, people begin their work by adhering to a "good Muhurta." Even in traveling or taking medicine, people seek the favorability of time. By this, it is clearly expressed just how much importance the Muhurta holds in ordinary daily affairs.
As stated previously, Muhurta texts were composed specifically to determine auspicious and inauspicious times so that one might attain the desired fruits of every specific action. Generally, in these texts, the auspicious and inauspicious combinations arising from the mutual alignment of the Tithi lunar day, Vara weekday, Nakshatra lunar mansion, Yoga, and Karana are described, along with the presiding deities of these lunar days and elements.
