|| Salutations to the Illustrious Ganesha ||

|| I bow to the lotus feet of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, the Sun, Ganesha, the Daughter of the Mountain Parvati, and the Guru; they are the cause of awakening all sciences, supremely compassionate, and the givers of good knowledge. || 1 || Having thoroughly gathered the essence from various texts, scriptures, and diverse works, I am composing this manual Paddhati: a systematic manual or guidebook which is like a Wish-Fulfilling Cow Kamadhenu, entirely flawless and incomparable. || 2 ||

The year, the era, the month, the fortnight, the lunar day Tithi, the day of the week, and the planetary alignments; the lords of the lunar days, the constellations Nakshatras, the signs Rashis, the divisions Vargas, and the planetary strengths. || 3 || The horoscopes of women and men, the solar transit, the lineage Gotra, the yogas, the solar flaws, and the victory over time; the calculation of kinsmen, the names of mother and father—thus are the three-fold methods for the living. || 4 ||

The era of King Shalivahana stands at five, five, three, and one Shaka Era 1355, corresponding to 1433 CE. The year is also known by the era of the King Vikrama. || 5 || In the era of the Illustrious Vikrama Vikram Samvat... The text here describes a complex calendrical calculation involving the subtraction of specific numerical values to synchronize the Shaka and Samvat eras.

This is the standard. || 5 || The southern transit Dakshinayana begins with Cancer; the northern transit Uttarayana begins with Capricorn. The northern hemisphere Gola begins with Aries, while the southern is known to begin with Libra. || 6 || Starting from Capricorn, the seasons occur in pairs: Winter Shishira, Spring Vasanta, Summer Grishma, the Rainy Season Varsha, Autumn Sharad, and the Pre-winter season Hemanta; thus the six are named. || 7 ||
