On the Auspicious Journey and the Examination of the Earth

Yellow earth original: "Pita" is for the Merchant Vaishya, and black earth, smelling of pungent wine, is for the Laborer Shudra. || 13 ||

The earth that tastes sweet and is white or gold-colored is highly praised. The soil must be tested for its oiliness and moisture. ... || 14 ||

Having examined the ground, one should worship the threshold with the Creator Brahma and the lords of the directions Dikpalas with beautiful flowers. || 15 ||

If the soil is deficient, the fruit result will be deficient; if the soil is fertile, the lineage prospers. One should fill a pit with water and walk a hundred paces; if the water remains, it is best; if it is half-gone, it is medium; if it is empty, it is the lowest quality. || 16 ||

On the Slopes and Directions

...In the south-east, there is the fear of death; in the south-west, there is destruction. If the ground slopes toward the north-west, it brings the loss of wealth and sorrow; if toward the west, it brings gold and auspiciousness to the Priests. If it slopes toward the north, it brings great wealth. || 17 ||

...The signs and the directions must be calculated in order... for the benefit of men. || 18 ||
