In the direction of the sky the Northeast, one finds Jaya, Aditi, and Shikhi. In the direction of the Fire the Southeast are Vitatha and Gruhakshata. In the direction of the Ancestors the Southwest are the deities of the void, and in the direction of the Wind the Northwest are the guardians of the gates. Parjanya and the other directions are established here.
On the right arm sits the Sun Surya, and on the left arm is the Moon. On the right hand is Savita, and on the left is the Earth-holder Dharadhara. In the region of the thighs are the groups of the Maruts and Mitra. In this system, the Creator Brahma is placed in the center, shining with divine light.
Ishana the form of Shiva in the Northeast, Parjanya, Jayanta, Indra, the Sun, Satya, Bhrisha, and the Sky Antariksha are the deities of the eastern side. In the corner of Fire Southeast are Agni, Pusha, Vitatha, and the House-protector Gruhakshata.
The Hungry Ghost
Then follows Yama the Lord of Death, Gandharva, Bhringaraja, and the Deer Mriga. In the direction of the Ancestors Southwest are the Pitris, Dauvarika, Sugriva, and Pushpadanta. In the West are Varuna Lord of the Waters, Asura, Shosha, and Disease Papi-yakshma. In the Northwest are Vayu the Wind, the Serpent Naga, and the Main One Mukhya. In the North are Bhallata, Soma the Moon/Kubera, and the Mountain Aditi.
These twenty-one deities are situated on the outer perimeter. Now, the thirteen deities who reside in the inner middle section are described:
Aryama is in the East, Vivasvan is in the South, Mitra is in the West, and the Earth-holder Prithvidhara is in the North. In the very center of all these, Brahma must be placed, for he brings auspiciousness to the entire structure.
Between the corners of the Water-god and the Wind-god, Savitri and Savita are located. In the corner of the Great Indra Mahendra, Jaya is found. In the Southwest, Rudra and the Lotus-born Brahma's aspect are placed alongside Yama.
In the second ring, Vidarika is placed, and in the Southwest corner is Nirriti. The three types of Sinful Spirits Paparakshasas are in the Northwest corner, as prescribed by the ancient rules.
Brahma occupies the central four squares padas. The deities surrounding him occupy the middle squares. In the corners, the deities are assigned one square each. The Serpents and the Fire-spirits are also given their single-square portions. The deities like Aryama and others are assigned squares according to the proportions of the grid the text refers to the 64 or 81 square divisions.
In the three worlds, these deities are worshipped. In the outer corners, the "Half-Awakened" spirits reside. In the corners of the Creator, there are deities of two squares, while others are assigned only one square as declared by the sages.
The deities starting from Shiva Northeast and the Water-god West are placed with half-square portions in the corners. The horses, elephants, and vehicles of the gods are also assigned their specific spots in the cardinal directions.
Twenty deities are placed in the belly of the grid, starting from Aryama. The groups of Maruts and the celestial beings are honored with their own spaces. The Sun and the Wise Ones are given their portions.
These twenty-one deities, along with the Lotus-seated Brahma and Yama, provide happiness. The Serpents, the Sun, and the Eight Gods are placed with the Serpents on the outer edge. The spirits of Wasting Shosha and the two-fold Vidarika are placed near the Lotus-grid. These are the sequences of the deities, who, when properly awakened and honored, protect the household.
