The Solar Treatise with the Illumination of the Hidden Meaning

...is a follower of the chapter on mathematics referring to the Ganitadhyaya, the section of astronomical calculations. Some, having obtained a translation of one or two English "formulas" original: "फॉर्म-डल" (formula) received from their teacher, desire to attain the rank of an astrologer while boasting of their service to that teacher; others, without even knowing the principle of the precession of the equinoxes Ayanamsha: the angular distance between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs, simply imitate some Western astronomer who acts according to his own will. May all the aforementioned gentlemen read this original text, find honor at the feet of their respective teachers and the great sage who authored the Surya Siddhanta—the supreme teacher of Bhaskara and others—and thereby extinguish their internal vanity.

The humble translator dedicates his worthless attempt to the benefactor of the Sanskrit knowing population of India i. e. Khemaraj Shrikrishnadas Proprietor of the S. V. S. Press—Bombay.

Among the scriptural texts composed by the ancient sages and monks, the astronomical treatise named Surya Siddhanta is honored in all countries. There is no doubt that the science of astronomy Jyotish: encompasses both astronomy and astrology in this context is a preeminent science. Knowing that the protection and expansion of this science would bring welfare to the world, and encouraged by your enthusiasm, I have translated the Surya Siddhanta into the refined language Standard Hindi with great effort and much labor. You well know how difficult the science of mathematics is for the general public. By receiving this translation, there will be a special benefit to the learned astronomers. The specialty is that, by relying on the examples I have provided, it will not be very difficult to enter into the depths of this complex science.

By placing this translated work into the lotus-hands of you—the protector of all scriptures—I hope that by publishing it, you will circulate it throughout all of India. Without the help of wealthy people, no great work is accomplished in India. With this thought, and with the desire for this book to be publicized, I am joining it with your most illustrious name.
