A Karana is half of a Tithi (lunar day). There are 11 types of Karanas: 7 "movable" and 4 "fixed."
Movable Karanas:
1. Bava, 2. Balava, 3. Kaulava, 4. Taitila, 5. Gara, 6. Vanija, 7. Vishti (Bhadra).
These seven are the rotating ones.
Fixed Karanas:
8. Shakuni, 9. Chatushpada, 10. Naga, 11. Kimstughna.
These occur only at specific points in the lunar month, such as the New Moon.
